THE TERRACES AT THE
CAPITOLINE
This stately home has noble origins whose family bore five legendary Popes. Today its neighbors still include Princes and Rome’s elite.
At its heart, the primary bedroom with its canopy, oversized bed and commissioned artworks looks onto the Altare della Patria, monument and symbol for Italy’s power and unity. The rest of the home’s interiors are adorned with the finest marbles and antique furnishings while its ample outdoor spaces champion 360 degree views unrivalled from other private residences.
The Terraces at the Capitoline features two bedroom suites to accommodate up to four guests, a marble-vested living room and dining area , an enclosed terrace dining room and more than 200 m² of outdoor terraces with sweeping views of ancient Rome.
The home’s layout is spread out over three floors. From street level, an elevator provides access to the entry floor. The entrance opens into the marble living room with formal seating areas directed toward picture windows framing looking out to the Altare della Patria, Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, and Piazza Venezia. One end of the living room leads to the bedrooms located on the lower floor while the other end provides access to the upper floor terraces and terrace dining room.
Other key features of the home include:
The primary bedroom suite is a work of art in itself. A marble staircase downstairs into a stately sitting room with a regal chaise lounge and custom floor-to-ceiling wardrobe. A spacious ensuite bath is located under the staircase. There is a small balcony on the other end of the sitting room as well as the bedroom – the crown jewel of the home’s interior spaces.
Original hand-painted wooden coffered ceilings loom 5 meters over head while a dramatic draped canopy crowns the extra-large king bed that looks directly onto the monumental views outside. Contemporary Italian artists were commissioned to produce works specifically for the bedroom, including scenes of nobles in leisurely poses.
The second bedroom suite provides a more intimate experience being tucked inside with a window overlooking the interior courtyard. The entire interior is covered in hand-painted frescoes of traditional Italian garden scenes and allegories. The ensuite bath is swathed in travertine and has a spacious glass shower.
The polished marble living room sparkles at the center of the home, connecting the lower floors with the terraces above. Plush furnishings create distinct sitting areas for conversation or gazing at the views. The formal dining table at the far end of the hall is surrounded by hand painted panels depicting allegorical figures. The table is marble inlay and an exact replica of a table owned by King Louis XVI of France, the last king of France (the original table, also owned by the homeowners, is located at their Paris residence).
Tucked behind the dining area is an intimate, gilded sitting room and studio. Ideal for use as an office or for watching TV, the room also opens onto a small balcony.
The Terrace Dining Room is a space for one-of-a-kind dining experiences. The room is lined with marble busts and ancient friezes, surrounding a dining table that comfortably seats eight. The space is air-conditioned and enclosed in glass panels that can be opened when weather permits. There is a separate open-air terrace adjacent the closed dining room. The two spaces together are also ideal for small gatherings and celebrating special occasions.
The main kitchen is located next to the terrace dining room, providing easy access for all-season dining.
In addition to the terrace dining room, the home has three other terraces. All of the terraces offer various seating options, including custom marble benches, bistro table, and a high top table with bar seats with a framed view of the Campidoglio.
The two highest terraces offer the most complete 360° views of Rome’s ancient city center. The 19th century tower was constructed by Duke Mario Massimo as his personal astronomical observatory.
